Topical Vitamin D provides more benefits than oral for some people

It appears that ~10% of people will benefit from Topical more than the Oral form of Vitamin D
It appears that ~20% of people having specific health problems will get more benefit from Topical than Oral

  • Preeclampsia. Food Allergy, PTSD, Ear infection, Infertility, MS, Colon Cancer, TB, Asthma, COPD, Epilepsy, Atrial Fibrillation. Liver
  • Also suspect for those people with poor guts: Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes

However, Topical formsof Vitamin D are:

  • 10X-100X more expensive
  • Harder to use than oral for most people
  • Do not easily allow high doses - for loading doses or non daily dosing (biweekly etc)
    • Vitamin D cream might be OK - 5 squirts of cream = 50,000 IU

Most body tissues can fully activate Vitamin D locally (without the Liver and Kidneys)
Tissues such as the skin, the inside of the cheeks, the lungs, and the nose
Some people have a poor vitamin D binding gene

  • Limits the amount of semi-activated Vitamin D from the liver
  • The vitamin D binding gene does not appear to limit vitamin D that is activated by tissue

An increasing number of people have poor Vitamin D genes

  • Starting in the 1930's people with poor immune systems have been surviving due to better hygiene, antibiotics, vaccines, etc.
  • Since then, poor immune system genes have more frequently been passed on to future generations
  • Before there was "Survival of the Fittest", but there is "Survival of the Survivors"

Many reasons why vitamin D deficiency has become epidemic includes the following chart

Topical Vitamin D sources include:

Note: Topical Vitamin D may also be BETTER than most oral forms if you:

  • Have Gut problems
  • Dislike swallowing pills
  • Have a low/poor blood level response to vitamin D supplementation- e.g., poor CYP27A1 gene (in your liver)
  • Have poor Vitamin D Binding Protein (in your blood)

Vitamin D Binding Protein category in Vitamin D Life has 141 items and starts with:

Vitamin D Binding Protein (GC) gene can decrease the bio-available Vitamin D that can get to cells,

  • GC is not the only such gene - there are 3 others, all invisible to standard Vitamin D tests
  • The bio-available calculation does not notice the effect of GC, CYP27B1, CYP24A1, and VDR
  • The actual D getting to the cells is a function of measured D and all 4 genes
  • There is >2X increase in 8+ health problems if have poor VDBP (GC)
  • It appears that VDBP only blocks oral vitamin D,

Vitamin D Binding Protein list of health problems includes:
Preeclampsia, Food Allergy, PTSD, Poor Response to Oral Vitamin D, Ear infection, Multiple Sclerosis, Colorectal Cancer, Prostate Cancer - blacks,
Infertility. TB, Asthma, COPD, Epilepsy, Atrial Fibrilation, and Obesity

Blood Test Misses a lot (VDW 3439)

Mystery of why UVB is better than oral supplementation resolved after 7 years
  • A 2012 study found that:
Vitamin D blood levels produced by UV were 2X better for MS than those from supplements
  • For years people speculated that the Sun/UVB produced something in addition to Vitamin D
  • But, studies have found many health problems, such as MS. to be assocated with poor genes:
MS studies and Vitamin D Binding Protein (5), Vitamin D Receptor (11), Genes (20)
  • Mystery solved: Oral and topical sources will produce same blood level, but topical will get more activated vitamin D to the tissues if poor VDBP

Remaining mystery: Why does Vitamin D from UV last 2X longer in the body than from oral sources

  • Might there be a better storage location for Vitamin D in tissue (muscle?)
  • Might non-UV topical sources also have a 2X longer half-life in the body?

3 Reasons why you have not heard that Vitamin D is good for the skin:

1) Vitamin D has been patented to help the skin - and companies do not want to pay royalties

2) FDA requires a LOT of data to allow a claim that a supplement can improve health

It appears to cost >$30,000 to prepare, present, and defend a single health claim for a supplement

3) Only recently have Vitamin D doses been large enough to really help (400X)

< year 2000 2019 increase
Drops200 IU/dropper
(10 IU/drop)
4,000 IU 400X
Capsule200 IU100,000 IU 500X
